Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Butch Powell, former assistant director of the WVSSAC, who passed away in July. View the obituary here.
And our deepest sympathies are with the Pleasants County and St. Marys communities as they mourn the tragic loss of St. Marys wrestler Wesley Scoggan, who died in an ATV accident on August 1, and his mother Amy, who passed away last weekend. A fund has been set up for the family. Donations can be made to, "The Amy Scoggan Fund" and sent to Willow Island Federal Credit Union, 302 Second St., St. Marys, WV 26170.

Vincent Delligatti Steps Down as Fairmont Senior Head Coach
Our sympathy goes out to Coach Sterling Beane and his family at the passing of his wife Judy.
Judy was a long time supporter of high school wrestling and was instrumental in the formation of the Braxton County High School wrestling team in 1972.
She also served as an assistant wrestling coach at BCHS in the 1990's and was the tournament director for the Braxton Invitational Tournament.
The funeral was this past weekend, but the obituary can be viewed here .

From Bill Archer: Bridgeport will not be participating in the AAA state tournament due to COVID quarantine restrictions. The following weight classes are affected: 120, 138, 145, 160, 170, 182, 195, and 285. All Region I wrestlers will be bumped up where applicable, and the AAA Region I 5th-place finisher in each weight class will now fill the "F1" position in the respective brackets.
Complete updates will be posted soon, and corrected brackets will be forthcoming. Coaches will be given updated brackets at the state tournament.
Editor's note: While it's always heartbreaking for a wrestler to have to withdraw from the state tournament for any reason, it's absolutely devastating when an entire team has to withdraw. I am not ashamed to say that I am a praying person. I am sincerely praying for peace and comfort for these young men, their coaches, their families, and their fans. Please take a moment to do the same, and also thank God for His mercy. It could just as well have been YOUR team. Please do what you need to do to remain healthy for the next several days.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TICKET DISTRIBUTION:
Tickets for class AAA may be picked up by a team representative on Sunday April 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, and on Monday morning from 8:00-9:00. Teams will distribute the spectator tickets. AA-A tickets are being mailed to the school. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE CHANGES IN DIRECTIONS TO THE MOUNTAIN HEALTH ARENA!

Due to construction there is a change in directions to Mountain Health Arena for the State Wrestling Tournament. The 10th street viaduct is closed.
For those who get off the 5th street exit:, go down what is a big hill until you see 8th Ave. Turn right.
When you get to 8th Street you will see the closed viaduct. Go two more blocks straight ahead. You will see the 10th Street viaduct on the left. Go under the 10th Street viaduct and stay on 10th Street until you get to 3rd Ave. Turn left and go 3 blocks. The Mountain Health Arena is on the right.

From Independence athletic director:
Due to the restriction on seating capacity placed on us by the county health department and our county board we can only have 25% seating capacity in our gym. This was based on the number of wrestlers entered into the regional tournament this year. To keep this fair for all wrestlers we will allow each athlete two tickets.
AA/A Region II seeding meeting is tonight.

ATTENTION COACHES:
Please email us your schedules as soon as you get them finalized. We have noticed some scheduling conflicts, and by double-checking the submitted schedules we can help you iron out scheduling issues. You can email your schedule to wvmat@outlook.com.
Once again, we're going to release a pre-season team poll next Monday, February 15. If you haven't already voted, please go to the High School Coaches' Forum and vote, or send an email to wvmat@outlook.com. Please vote by 6:00 p.m. this Sunday, February 14.
Also, it's that time of year for HS/MS coaches, principals, or athletic directors to submit nominees for your team's Academic All State and Honor Roll recognition. All State certificates will be mailed to the coach c/o the school. No certificate is available for the Honor Roll members, but they will be recognized on this website as well. Again, you can email your lists to wvmat@outlook.com.

FROM THE WVSSAC REGARDING THE 50% RULE:
Due to the ongoing pandemic, an already shortened season and after conferring with sports medicine
and the coaches committee the 50% weigh-in rule has been removed for the 2020-2021 season.
However, should a wrestler choose to wrestle at a lower weight class for the regional and state tournament
he/she must have weighed in at the lower weight class at least once during the regular season.

Update 3/11/20. It is now 10:38 AM. I just got out of bed and am checking this. I went thru my email last night (about 200 or 300 emails) (about 2:00 or 3:00 AM, before I went to bed), and checked all the email in my inbox, and the junk mail folder, and also the email that comes in the "coaches" and "scores" and "other stuff" folders, and forwarded the emails that concerned "wrestling" to the new editor. It should only take the new editor a few months to sort it all out. Stay tuned...

Which High School in West Virginia could do the BEST National Anthem?
Solo artist, chorus, how about chorus and band, or maybe CHORUS AND ORCHESTRA, maybe rock band, or barbershop quartet? Maybe something like a church choir or show choir?
Which school would have the BEST? It would of course be a judgement call, and judgement calls are unheard of in activities such as basketball, football, wrestling, baseball, etc. Right?
Maybe we can work it in somehow with the State Wrestling Tournament.
The State Championship National Anthem Singing finals could occur in conjunction with the Wrestling State Tournament in Huntington. Whatever the entry is, they would have to appear on the mat and be ready to sing/play in 5 minutes, and leave the mat when finished in 5 minutes.

February 19 National Girls High School Rankings
National Wrestling Hall of Fame, USA Wrestling and FloWrestling are again partnered to create national rankings for high school girls wrestlers for the 2019-20 season.
Starting with this ranking, there will be 25 athletes ranked in each of the 14 weight classes, an increase from the 20 athletes ranked in each weight since the national ranking was launched in July of 2017. This was done due to the explosive growth of girls high school wrestling nationwide, as well as the expansion of girls state championships.
This ranking evaluates all girls enrolled in grades 9-12, and includes athletes from all 50 states. There are 21 states which sponsor official or emerging girls state high school championships, while many other states are also developing their girls high school program.
The ranking list will indicate what the athlete's ranking was in the January rankings.
This ranking reflects results from a large number of official and unofficial girls state wrestling championships, held all over the United States, so far this year. Official state tournaments already held include Alaska, Colorado, Georgia and Arizona. Among the unofficial state girls meets held across the nation were Indiana, Iowa, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin, Nevada, Kentucky, Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina and Idaho.
There is only one new No. 1 ranked wrestler in the February 2020 rankings, Illinois native Korina Blades, who is a sophomore at Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania and is ranked in the 127-pound weight class. Blades joins her sister Kennedy Blades, who also attends Wyoming Seminary and is ranked No. 1 nationally at 164 pounds.
Coming up in the next ranking, expected to be posted by mid-March, will be official state tournaments in Maine, Arkansas, Missouri, Hawaii, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Kansas, California, Oregon, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland and New Jersey. Other unofficial state meets to watch for results are Ohio, Oklahoma, Illinois and others.
After the next ranking, the major off-season girls wrestling competitions will be hosted. Athletes seeking to improve their ranking or break into the national rankings are highly recommended to attend the 2020 USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle National Championships, set for the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado, March 26-29. This is the largest national girls folkstyle tournament in the nation, featuring outstanding athletes from across the nation. Talented and motivated girl high school wrestlers traditionally enter this event.
Projected publication dates for the national girls high school rankings are March 11, April 29 and July 1.
The staffs from these three leading wrestling organizations are working together to strategically publish this ranking throughout the year. The girls high school ranking will appear on the websites of all three organizations, and be promoted through each of their different media platforms.
The committee expects to publish its first National Girls High School Team Rankings in March, sometime after all of the state tournaments are completed.
Coaches, parents and athletes are encouraged to provide specific information about athletes and high school teams for the committee to consider. If you have information on specific girls who should be considered for ranking, please send it by email to girlsrankings@usawrestling.org

Memo from Coach Bill Archer, Long Time State Wrestling Tournament Director (48 years), former Head Coach Huntington High School, WV HS State Champ 127lbs 1966 Huntington High, Inducted WV Chapter NWHOF in 2007:
The City, County, Convention Bureau and the Archer Family donated over $21,000 to the State Tournament. The State Tournament profit to the the WVSSAC was $35,000. The rules clinic (not much) comes out of this too.
Wrestling was one of the few tournament events that did not have revenue go down last year.
Wrestling has had tremendous growth. If you can believe this, our first tournament we used the first mat side scoreboard, (if you can believe it - 2 sided), 4 mats, and we moved the partition that slides out at about 65 per cent of arena.
We are adjusting the seats this year to back for early rounds and moving them back out for Saturday matches, to pick back up the 600 seats for the finals.
Huntington High purchased the mats and clocks. Huntington High receives $1000 rent for mats and clocks. When we rented them before we had the clocks it was $ 6400.
These are the facts. I believe the WVSSAC has made this of public record.
This close to the WSAZ tournament with a record breaking 1400 wrestlers I am beginning to think am too old for this.

Washington High School will be hosting its second annual Elite Opener on December 4, 2021. All wrestlers will get 5 matches, wrestlers will be seeded 1st through 12th, then put into 3 pools of 4. Depending on how they finish in their pool will determine what placing matches they will be put into- example the top wrestler in each pool will wrestle for 1st-3rd and bottom wrestlers from each pool will wrestle for 10th-12th. All teams that finish in the top 8 will be able to return, and we will choose the best 4 that apply for the following year to keep the tournament tough. Results from 2019 are on track if you'd like to look at the tournament.

Warm Springs Middle School is putting together a 10-team middle school dual tournament on December 18, 2021 that will be ran on 3 mats at Warm Springs Middle School (Berkeley Springs, WV). We are working to get middle school teams from WV, VA, and other locations for this event. If you are interested, the fee will be $250 for the event and each team will get 5 matches. Team championship plaque will also be awarded. Please confirm of your interest to Jamie Harris at j.harris@k12.wv.us.
